At an altitude of 1,300 m in the Piedmont region of north-west Italy, the town of Cesana is home to about 1,000 year-round inhabitants. Built in the Middle Ages, for many years now it has welcomed holidaymakers from all over Europe, especially during the winter.
Sporty resort
Skiing is the cornerstone of Cesana. Part of the massive Via Lattea area, this resort boasts a track for bobsleigh, tobogganing and skeleton bob. Alongside this, it played host to some of the events during the 2006 Winter Olympics.
In terms of accommodation, you can choose from 3- and 4-star hotels (such as the Edelweiss), or charming chalets with exposed timber and typical local architecture, as well as more affordable 2-star hotels and apartment complexes.
You’ll find all the shops you need locally for a great holiday: mini-markets, crafts and souvenir shop, typical restaurants and ski rental shops too.
Via Lattea ski area
Cesana is linked to one of the largest ski areas in Italy with a total of 400 km of downhill pistes served by 71 ski lifts. The resort has a staggering vertical descent of 1,400 m. Snow-sure conditions exist throughout the season thanks to the huge network of 900 snow cannons spread across the pistes.
Children will be happy to take their first steps learning to ski alongside qualified instructors at the snow club or in one of the nearby ski schools. Expert skiers in search of an adrenaline rush should catch the ski lift at Sestriere that climbs up to the Monte Motta at 2,823 m altitude. From there, staggering verticals and unforgettable off-piste trails await. And to top it all off, there is a breathtaking panorama overlooking the entire high valley.
